WASM - Jordan, the Levant region, and Iraq are being affected by a strong, widespread heat wave causing severe temperature increases exceeding 40 degrees Celsius in Amman and 53 degrees Celsius in wide areas of central and eastern Iraq including Baghdad and Basra.
The strong heat wave continues until Thursday and begins to gradually recede during Friday and the first days of Eid al-Adha.
The strong heat wave coincides with heavy rainfall in southern Saudi Arabia and Mecca during the Hajj period, with rain clouds extending in a limited manner to parts of northern Saudi Arabia and Jordan, resulting in strong winds and dust storms.
WASM advises caution regarding the strong heat wave affecting Jordan, northern Saudi Arabia, and Iraq this week, recommending increased water consumption, avoiding direct sunlight, eating fruits and vegetables, and running air conditioning units at temperatures between 23-24 degrees Celsius only to ensure high efficiency and minimal electricity consumption.
The cause of these weather conditions is the surge of humid seasonal winds toward southern and western Saudi Arabia combined with a high pressure system over Syria, coinciding with a low pressure system over Egypt. This causes extremely hot winds to be pushed toward northern Saudi Arabia, Jordan, the Levant, and Iraq, while humid seasonal winds causing heavy rainfall are pushed toward southern Saudi Arabia and the Asir, Jazan, Al-Baha, Taif, and Mecca regions.
