Jordan.. Alert of Heavy Thunderstorms, Particularly Over Southern Jordan, Petra, and Aqaba Monday Evening

WASM -  Monitoring WASM is tracking a heavy rainy weather condition beginning Monday evening and night across various regions with its impact concentrated on the southern regions, Aqaba, Wadi Rum, Shobak, Petra, and the southern Jordan Valley mainly, and is expected to result in heavy rainfall and the formation of widespread floods in low-lying areas and valleys, therefore WASM advises preparation for weather conditions in those areas.

In detail, Jordan will be affected starting from Monday afternoon and evening by a cold air front "deep and highly effective" accompanied by a low pressure system positioned between Cyprus and Crete, and the crossing of the deep cold air front coincides with an influx of very warm and highly humid winds from the Red Sea towards the Gulf of Aqaba and southern Jordan then various regions of Jordan to a lesser extent, resulting in heavy thunderstorms across various regions but with its main impact concentrated in the southern regions, Aqaba, Wadi Rum area, Shobak, Petra, and surrounding those areas.

WASM will issue different alert levels starting with yellow on the northern and central regions then orange beginning from Karak and south of the Dead Sea then red on Shobak, Ma'an, Aqaba, and surrounding those areas.

Later during the late night hours, the weather condition will weaken temporarily across various regions but this is accompanied by the activity of southwestern winds because the center of the low pressure system has begun moving towards the southeast Mediterranean towards south of Cyprus and towards the coasts of southern Lebanon and northern Palestine, which will lead to renewed heavy thunderstorms on northern and central Jordan during the evening and night of Tuesday/Wednesday and reach southern Jordan Wednesday morning and continue at intervals until Thursday, which necessitates vigilance and preparation for weather conditions in those areas again.

WASM is monitoring the continuation of rainy weather conditions until the end of the current week, and WASM advises following alert levels continuously and staying away from low-lying areas and valleys.

We are working on continuous updates to our data and alert levels across various Jordanian cities during the upcoming weather condition which is expected to result in floods, heavy rainfall, and strong winds that stir up dust in desert areas.
