WASM- The Kingdom is being affected today by a "strong" condition of atmospheric instability resulting in thunderstorms, dust storms, and sudden strong winds as well as heavy thunderous rain showers and the formation of flash floods and transported floods in various areas of the Kingdom including major cities.
In detail, cumulonimbus thunderclouds are increasing gradually this afternoon and intensifying during the afternoon and evening periods in wide areas of the Kingdom resulting in thunderstorms and heavy rainfall, hail showers, strong winds and sudden dust storms. Therefore, full attention and caution must be exercised regarding the strength of weather conditions and those with respiratory diseases, allergies, and asthma should not leave their homes, as well as great caution while driving.
Thunderclouds will renew in the afternoon and evening of Monday and Tuesday over wide areas of the Kingdom resulting in renewed heavy thunderous rain showers at times and strong winds and sudden dust storms with the continuation of warm spring weather.
WASM issues a red alert level for the strong weather conditions affecting the Kingdom and for the strength of the atmospheric instability.
The Kingdom was affected by a strong dust storm on Saturday evening and the night of Saturday/Sunday resulting in a significant decrease in horizontal visibility and dust density and strong winds. The cause of this dust storm is due to the strength of the thunderstorms that were affecting northern Saudi Arabia and northeast Jordan which also caused flash floods and transported floods, and this massive dust storm reached Lebanon, Palestine, and the eastern Mediterranean Sea.
The cause of these weather conditions is due to the meeting of a warm and humid air mass in the lower layers of the atmosphere which is being pushed with an extension of the Red Sea low pressure system and coinciding with the deepening of cold air in the middle and upper layers of the atmosphere which causes atmospheric instability and then the formation of thunderstorms and severe weather disturbance. It is expected that these strong weather conditions will continue until at least the end of the week. WASM Regional Center had previously issued a series of early warnings about the strength of weather conditions and had knowledge of the strength of the weather situation several days ago due to the modern technology it possesses.
