WASM - August 2023 is expected to be cooler than average, particularly in the western regions of the Kingdom, while being warmer in the eastern part of the Kingdom. Temperature averages are expected to range from 0.5°C below seasonal norms in the western section to approximately 0.75°C above seasonal norms in the eastern part of the Kingdom, based on data from WASM Regional Climate Center's climate model.
During June and July, temperatures showed variation between the eastern and western parts of the Kingdom. They were approximately 0.5°C above seasonal averages in the eastern section but noticeably below seasonal norms in the western section, with the recording of unprecedented rainy conditions in recent climate records. This is attributable to the beginning of climate change impacts on the region.
Despite the intensity of heat waves in some parts of the world, they have not significantly affected the southeastern Mediterranean region. This is due to their concentration over southern Europe and north Africa, making it difficult for major hot air masses from the Arabian Peninsula desert to penetrate toward the Kingdom and Palestine, with their continued concentration over the eastern badlands and the Levantine badlands region.
August 2023 is expected to be characterized by rapid temperature changes compared to previous years, with significant temperature fluctuations anticipated especially during the second half of the month. This period is expected to coincide with unusual and rare seasonal atmospheric disturbances in some areas during the last 10 days of the month.
Forecasts through the beginning of September are expected to be as follows:
* 6th to 12th: Generally moderate with temperatures slightly below seasonal averages, gradually warming toward the end of the period.
* 13th to 19th: Hot conditions at the beginning of the period (lasting one to two days) followed by a significant and noticeable drop, with temperatures becoming considerably below seasonal norms.
* 20th to 26th: Significant temperature variations and unusual seasonal atmospheric disturbances throughout this period.
* 27th to the beginning of September: Temperatures tend to gradually decline as a cooler air mass approaches with early autumn characteristics.
According to data from WASM Regional Climate Center's climate model, autumn is expected to begin early this season, with early rainy conditions anticipated to intensify later during October and November. Further details regarding WASM Regional Climate Center's climate model data will be issued.
It is noted that the Kingdom has been affected by climate changes for several years, resulting in a significant increase in rainfall rates of approximately 60% in some areas, particularly the Dead Sea region. This is due to increased rates of drought and heat in large parts of Europe, which has caused changes in weather systems and facilitated the arrival of weather depressions and strong rainy conditions to the eastern Mediterranean region. These changes are expected to intensify during the upcoming rainy season, which may witness unprecedented rainy weather conditions in climate records, necessitating all sectors to prepare for the expected severe weather conditions.
