Jordan | Sharp temperature fluctuations from Sunday to Tuesday with thunderstorms starting at the end of the week

WASM- Temperatures will rise noticeably and significantly on Monday, followed by another decline on Tuesday as a result of the Kingdom being affected by an unusual atmospheric low pressure system near the coasts of Palestine and ahead of an unseasonable rainy weather condition that begins with the weekend break.

In detail, temperatures will rise on Monday to around 31 degrees Celsius in the capital and mountains, becoming slightly above their seasonal averages, followed by a noticeable decline on Tuesday with the presence of clouds at different altitudes and light rain showers falling in various regions of the Kingdom.

Unusual low atmospheric pressure over the eastern Mediterranean at the end of the week...
Atmospheric pressure will drop over a wide range of the eastern Mediterranean, Egypt, and western Saudi Arabia during the weekend in an unusual manner, causing the penetration of moist seasonal winds from the Arabian Sea region towards the eastern Mediterranean, Egypt, northern Saudi Arabia, and Jordan, causing a slight rise in temperatures and an increase in thunderstorm clouds in wide areas of the country and rainfall.

The unseasonable weather condition is not expected to coincide with cold temperatures, but rather with more moderate temperatures while maintaining the presence of thunderstorm clouds and rainfall in wide areas of the country.

The unusual and rainy weather condition is expected to intensify later during the end of May and beginning of June over a wide range of the eastern Mediterranean region, Egypt, and northwestern Saudi Arabia, causing more thunderstorm rains in these areas which extend towards Jordan, resulting from the deepening of moist seasonal winds from the Arabian Sea region (Monsoon)  towards a wide area of Egypt, Sudan, Somalia, the eastern Mediterranean, Jordan, the Levant region, western and northern Saudi Arabia, and parts of Iraq.

The deepening of seasonal winds towards the region occurs but in a limited and rare manner towards the region compared to this time of year, but this is expected to be the most pronounced condition compared to recent climate records, as a result of the intensification of the effects of climate change on the region, which has resulted in recent years in the intensification of rainy conditions and a significant and unprecedented increase in rainfall quantities.

Intensification of climate change and increased rainfall rates in the region..
Local Jordanian media outlets published incorrect information about climate changes in the region resulting from a misunderstanding of these changes, whereas climate change has actually caused a "very significant" increase in rainfall rates which necessitate adaptation, especially for both the agricultural and water sectors in the country. Rainfall rates in Jordan have increased since the 2014-2015 season by around 40-50% in some areas. Jordan recorded strong rainy seasons between 2018-2020 as well as the 2022 and 2023 seasons with performance approaching 200% in some areas. Of the previous 9 rainy seasons, the Kingdom recorded 7 strong rainy seasons in an unprecedented manner in the history of modern climate records.

Climate change is expected to cause thunderstorm rainfall at unseasonable times. The WASM Regional Center expects an increase in rainy conditions during the summer season in an unprecedented manner based on data from the climate model of the WASM Regional Center, the only one of its kind in the Arab region, where a wave of summer rainfall began 5 years ago in the Arabian Peninsula region with expectations that it will extend towards a wide range of Egypt, Jordan, and the Levant region during the coming years.
