Jordan | Weather Alert.. Severe Cold Air Mass and Winter Precipitation Intensifying at Week's End

WASM – The Kingdom is progressively being affected by a "severely cold" air mass for several days, resulting in "winter precipitation" and very cold conditions with occasional wind activity. It is not ruled out that these precipitations may be heavy at times.

Winter precipitation consists of rain mixed with snow and hail or in the form of snow showers sometimes in high mountains due to cold weather.

Severely cold conditions and winter precipitation on Monday and Tuesday|
In detail, the weather on Monday and Tuesday will be severely cold and partly cloudy with rain showers in scattered areas, which are sometimes mixed with snow showers on the peaks of high mountains.

Atmospheric low-pressure system on Wednesday and Thursday|
An atmospheric low-pressure system forms over the Cyprus basin on Wednesday and its effects continue until Friday morning, accompanied by severely cold conditions and winter precipitation falling at intervals. These precipitations will be heavy at times, especially on Thursday, and sometimes fall in the form of snow showers on the peaks of high mountains in the Kingdom, particularly in the southern regions.

Temperatures will be around 7-8 degrees Celsius during the day and near freezing at night in the capital and mountains, and lower in high mountains. Therefore, attention should be paid to the cold weather and the continuation of winter precipitation sometimes during the current week.

More polar air masses in the coming weeks|
In the distant periods, WASM Regional Center is monitoring the continued advance of severely cold polar air masses and their approach to the Kingdom. A new winter storm is being monitored for possibility later during the end of February and beginning of March, accompanied by additional amounts of precipitation. Multiple areas of the Kingdom have achieved their seasonal rainfall early, and for the fifth consecutive year since the 2018-2019 season, due to sharp climate changes affecting the Kingdom, which have resulted in a significant increase in rainfall rates in recent years.

Historic precipitation amounts during the recent winter storm|
Precipitation amounts from January 30 to February 9 reached 300 mm in west of the capital Amman at the Khaldah station, and exceeded 300-400 mm in areas north of the Kingdom based on stations of the Ministry of Agriculture. These are very large quantities equivalent to 60-80% of the entire seasonal rainfall.
Therefore, it was a major mistake to rush and declare a drought wave in an unscientific manner and disregarding the strong weather systems that have affected the Kingdom previously, as a result of a misunderstanding of the climate changes occurring in Jordan. Climate changes have caused a significant increase in rainfall rates (around 150-170%) and not a decrease as is circulated in local Jordanian media outlets. Heavy precipitation has become concentrated in shorter periods compared to previous years. WASM Regional Center will work to raise the cultural level regarding climate changes in Jordan.
