Jordan | Weather Alert: Strong Heat Wave Beginning Friday and Lasting for an Extended Period

WASM – A "strong" heat wave will affect the region starting Friday and will continue for an extended period exceeding two weeks, with varying intensity at times and temperatures reaching levels in the forties Celsius. Temperatures will rise slightly tomorrow, Thursday, as a prelude to the "strong" heat wave, reaching 33 degrees Celsius, then rising on Friday to reach 36 degrees Celsius in the capital, and increasing further on Saturday to approach 40 degrees Celsius in the capital, with temperatures exceeding 45 degrees Celsius in low-lying areas, the Jordan Valley, and Aqaba, while remaining around 35 degrees Celsius in the high mountains. Dry and hot easterly winds will blow on Saturday, resulting in light dust and exhausting conditions, then the intensity of the heat wave will ease slightly on Sunday and Monday. The WASM regional center is monitoring a significant intensification of the heat wave mid to late next week, with temperatures rising to high levels, and all updates will be issued continuously. It is recommended to avoid direct sunlight and wear light-colored, light clothing, drink water and fluids in abundance, and not leave disinfectants inside vehicles, and operate air conditioning units at temperatures not lower than 22-24 degrees Celsius. The cause of this "strong" heat wave is the surge of hot and dry winds from the deserts of northern Saudi Arabia as a result of the formation of a thermal low-pressure system over the eastern part of the Kingdom, as well as the fact that northern Europe will be affected by polar air early on, which will lead to the continued surge of very hot air into the Mediterranean region and Jordan.
