WASM Regional Center | Western Europe Experiences Historically Hottest Start to Summer This Year

WASM - Western Europe experienced the worst start to summer and the hottest June on record since the beginning of modern climate records according to the Copernicus CS3 system specialized in monitoring climate change.

The average daily temperature on June 30, 2025 in western Europe reached its highest level since the beginning of modern climate records at around 24.9 degrees Celsius, with the impact of a severe heat wave on Western Europe.

These heat waves caused an estimated 2,300 deaths between June 23 and July 2 according to estimates in 12 European cities.

Western Europe was affected during June by two heat waves, the first was after mid-month, and the second was between late June and early July, which recorded record levels in many regions.

Europe is also currently experiencing other strong and successive heat waves and is expected to continue throughout July, which indicates an extremely hot and unusual summer.

In contrast, the eastern Mediterranean regions and large parts of the Levant and Arabian Peninsula are still experiencing a summer that is cooler than usual to moderate in mountainous areas, and unusually compared to previous years due to the intensification of climate change that causes hot waves to be pushed towards regions that do not normally experience such weather conditions.

These strong heat waves are caused by an unusual circulation pattern of the atmosphere and weak activity of the jet stream over the western Mediterranean and eastern Atlantic, which has made it easier for hot winds to surge from the great deserts towards Western Europe.

WASM Regional Center issued a detailed scientific report on the cause of increasing heat waves in Western Europe in recent years and their decrease in the eastern Mediterranean region and its surroundings and the decline in temperatures below their averages in many areas of central and northern Saudi Arabia coinciding with an increase in rainfall rates.
