Weather Alert: Heavy Thunderstorms Expected Over Aqaba, Shoubak, and Southern Jordan Tomorrow Evening Monday

WASM - WASM is monitoring a heavy rainy weather condition that begins Monday evening and night across various regions, with its effects concentrated on the southern regions, Aqaba, Wadi Rum, Shobak, Petra, and the southern Jordan Valley mainly. It is expected to result in heavy rains and the formation of widespread floods in low-lying areas and valleys in southern Jordan. Therefore, WASM advises preparing for weather conditions in those areas. This coincides with active winds that reach gust speeds of more than 50 km/hour, which necessitates issuing a red alert level for southern Jordan including Aqaba and surrounding areas.

.

Later during the late night hours, the weather condition weakens temporarily across various regions, but this is accompanied by active southwestern winds, as the center of the atmospheric low pressure system has begun moving towards the south-southeast of the Mediterranean Sea towards south of Cyprus island and the direction of southern Lebanese coasts and northern Palestine. This leads to a renewal of heavy thunderstorm rains on northern and central Jordan during evening hours and the night of Tuesday/Wednesday, reaching southern Jordan Wednesday morning and continuing periodically until Thursday, which necessitates attention and preparation for weather conditions in those areas again.

In detail, Jordan is affected starting from the afternoon and evening of Monday by a deep cold weather front "high effectiveness" accompanied by an atmospheric low pressure system positioned between Cyprus island and Crete. The crossing of the deep cold weather front coincides with an influx of very warm and highly humid winds from the Red Sea towards the Gulf of Aqaba and southern Jordan, then various regions of Jordan to a lesser extent. This results in heavy thunderstorm rain showers across various regions, but its effects are concentrated mainly on the southern regions, Aqaba, Wadi Rum area, Shobak, Petra, and the areas surrounding those regions.

WASM will issue various alert levels starting from yellow on northern and central regions, then orange beginning from Karak and south of the Dead Sea, then red on Shobak, Ma'an, Aqaba, and the areas surrounding those regions.

WASM is monitoring the continuation of rainy weather conditions until the end of the current week. WASM advises following alert levels continuously and staying away from low-lying areas and valleys.

We are working on continuously updating our data and alert levels for various Jordanian cities during the upcoming weather condition that is expected to result in floods, heavy rains, and strong winds that stir dust in desert areas.
